Episode 198: Summer Chicken Stew, Salad-y Slaws, and Our Joy of Cooking Potluck

A few of the delicious dishes from our recent Joy of Cooking potluck dinner

In food news this week, we discuss The New York Time’s recent decision to put most of its Cooking section content behind a pay wall.

In our What’s for Dinner segment, Joy dishes on a new favorite recipe: Summer Italian Chicken. (Note: Joy de-paleofies this by adding a can of rinsed chick peas and serving it over polenta.)

Marisa is loving a hearty slaw-type salad for this summer’s meals, either as a side or a base for an entree style salad.

Earlier this month, we held a Joy of Cooking themed, Local Mouthful hosted pot luck in Philadelphia for listeners. We had so much fun. And we definitely plan to hold another one again soon. Keep listening for details on how to sign up 🙂

This week in our What We’re Digging segment, we talk about salad chain Sweetgreen.

  1. Hi Joy and Marisa! Just wanted to say how much I love the podcast. I have owned Marisa’s book, Food in Jars, for a few years now and was watching Marisa do a FB live a few weeks ago when she mentioned the podcast. I have been binge listening ever since. I want to thank you both for doing the podcast and putting all of the great information out into the world that you both have to share. I also wanted to let you know that I have been inspired to get a Joy of Cooking Potluck going in my area. I live in Asheville, NC and we have such a great food community here in the mountains. I’m currently working on it and trying to find out what kind of interest there is amongst my friends and friends of friends. Anyway, thanks again for all y’all do and I’ll keep you posted on when our potluck ends up happening. Cheers!

    1. I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the podcast and that you’re starting your own potluck. Perhaps we can have you on the show once you’ve had your first gathering, to tell us all about it!

  2. Re: NY Times Cooking access… For the past few years the NY Times has done a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale that locks in a 50% discount for various subscriptions for a year. Last year’s online subscription price (web and all app access) was down to $7.50/month. It’s worth watching out for the 2017 sale to see if a stand-along Cooking subscription is offered at a discount…
