I have to agree with Marisa, I don’t think the solution to the meat issue is eating fake meat. Just because it is “plant-based” doesn’t mean it is good for you OR the planet. Last I checked they don’t grow fields of pea protein and GMO-soy wasn’t considered a good thing (the article sites these as the main ingredient in the 2 most popular brands). No doubt this will be blamed for a health issue 20 years from now…remember margarine? And if you’re buying these at fast food chains as a way to avoid meat, you are still supporting companies that produce heaps of waste and are a big player in industrial meat farming. If you want to eat less meat the healthiest solution for your body, and the planet, is probably just eat more veg and legumes…as they appear naturally. The article talks about how meat consumption in China rose as people gained financial security, like many countries we’ve travelled success means emulating the west, diet included. On the surface these products might make you feel better about your choices, but things don’t seem so cut and dry when you really start to consider how they are made/grown/processed. Interesting episode! P.S. Joy, thanks for the hearts of palm cake idea, easy to get and store in the tropics.
